Oil tanks Aboveground domestic oil tanks must meet CAN/ULC-S602 certification standards, and bear an identification plate or label.

Maximum volumetric capacity:

  • For indoor installation: 550 gallons (2,500 l) for one tank or for two tanks in connecting vessels; a total of 1,100 gallons (5,000 l) if there are more than two tanks.
  • For outdoor installation: 550 gallons (2,500 l) for one tank or two.

Domestic fuel tanks often present three types of malfunction:

  • Manufacturing defect
  • Mechanical trouble
  • Corrosion
  • All tank models and production methods can have manufacturing defects; however, competent manufacturers constantly seek to reduce them and improve the quality of their products.
  • Location is a key factor in reducing risks of mechanical troubles. The tank must be installed on a solid and appropriate foundation to ensure stability. Vulnerable parts must be protected: indicators, valves, oil lines, etc.
  • Corrosion can occur inside and outside the tank. To avoid corrosion, consult your installer.
  • Location

Fuel storage tanks can be installed indoor and outdoor. It is however recommended to install them indoor. They must be installed in a room where visual inspection on all sides of the tank is possible. A clearance of 2 inches (50 mm) must be maintained between the tank and the walls, and a clearance of 4 inches (100 m) must be maintained 100 mm underneath the tank and the floor. The label or plate must be visible.

If installed outdoor, tanks must not be placed underneath a cornice, where it would be exposed to snow, ice and corrosion due to water dripping from the roof. If there is no other place to install the tank, make sure to build a shelter or a protection to prevent damage.

    Propane gas

Installation of propane gas bottle of less than 475 l (420 lb) To make sure that gas bottles are installed safely, follow the recommendations provided below.

Each bottle must be placed on a solid, waterproof and leveled stand; the stand must rest on very compact soil and be fitted with flexible service pipes to protect pipes and tubes from unwanted compaction.
